Nintendo made some bold moves with the release of the newest video game console system, the Wii. Nintendo’s biggest gamble, that also held the biggest payoff, is their
revolutionary new controller. Nicknamed the “Wiimote”, its advanced motion sensing capabilities allow for a style of gameplay unlike anything we’ve seen before.
Satisfy your inner snowboarder with EA Sports latest title, SSX Blur. This frantic, downhill racing game brings back fond memories from earlier SSX iterations. Your goal is the same:
race some of the most treacherous peaks in a variety of tournament styles. The single player mode begins with a tutorial to introduce you to the new controls. You can jump right into the
action by choosing a quick-play mode or compete in tournaments with your character in career mode. All the old familiar SSX tricks are still there, with the addition of some killer new
Ubertricks. SSX Blur offers dozens of unlockables including new tricks, new equipment, and new characters. Face off against your friends in split-screen competition for the title of
“King of the Mountain”.
If swordplay is more your style, then the latest installment in the Prince of Persia franchise should be just what you’re looking for. The third game in the Sands of Time trilogy,
Rival Swords exhibits the same smooth character movements and innovative gameplay that we saw in previous titles. Only this time, playing with the new motion-sensing controller provides
quite a different experience. Now with just a twist of your wrist, you’re able to execute stunning combat moves on your unwitting enemies. This game will push the limits of more
than just your hand eye coordination. Many rooms that you will encounter will require clever thinking to progress further. Puzzles come in many flavors, and often make use of the
Prince’s savvy climbing skills.
The genre of first person shooter is all but reinvented in Activision’s latest action release, Call of Duty 3. The year is 1944 during the Normandy Breakout, and it’s your
job to liberate Paris from Nazi control. As in previous versions, you’ll play as several different soldiers as you progress through the game. What makes this title unique is the
level of immersion the player feels. Throwing a grenade by making the movement of throwing a grenade is incredibly intuitive. Another creative use of the Wii Remote is employed when setting
explosives. Rather than pressing a button to place the bomb, Call of Duty 3 will have you physically twisting the fuse and arming the remote detonator.
Sonic the Hedgehog makes a return in Sonic and the Secret Rings. Sega Studios brings back everyone’s favorite blue rodent for more ring-finding fun. You’ll face various
foes, from evil genie minions to prehistoric raptors. Navigating the treacherous levels is made fresh and new again by clever implementation of the Wii Remote. By tilting
the controller left or right, it’s easy to adjust Sonic’s running speed. Sonic’s other signature moves such as sliding stops are all easily carried out through subtle
twists of the remote. Other creative uses for the Wii Remote include using it as a violin bow, canoe paddle, ax, and many, many more.
Reminiscing about the classic Contra series? Get your fix with SNK Playmore’s latest offering, Metal Slug Anthology. While on the surface the game may look like nothing more
than your standard side-scrolling shooter, it definitely warrants a closer look. There are 6 different controller configurations to choose from so you can pick which works best for your
style of gameplay.
Game developer Tecmo has created a golf game that will have you swinging your Wii Remote, just as you would your golf club out on the green. Super Swing Golf utilizes advanced motion,
depth, and position sensing to allow the controller to accurately mimic a golf club. Detailed characters and textures bring this unique fantasy world to life. Single player offers several
modes including story mode, where you follow a single characters career. Best of all, you can take on your friends in head to head match play and party modes.
Elebits is a new, kid-friendly first person action game from Konami. You inhabit a world where electricity is provided by tiny mischievous creatures called Elebits. You take on the
role of a child who is trying to restore power to his home, one room at a time. While the premise is undeniably odd, the result is a masterpiece. Your main tool is a gravity gun that you
will use to move objects to find the hiding Elebits. The game offers up a challenging puzzle around every corner, and the designers have succeeded in making each of the game’s rooms
feel unique and interesting. Elebits also has an edit mode where you can create your own levels to share with those on your Wii friends list.
Ubisoft continues its legendary stealth franchise with Splinter Cell Double Agent. You’ll step back into the shoes of NSA operative Sam Fisher as he uses his MacGuyver-like
inventory to defeat his foes. The artificial intelligence that you will face becomes increasingly proficient at disposing of you, so tactical use of stealth is paramount. Hiding in the
shadows is often your only chance of success and provides for heart-pounding suspense.
Hot on the heels of wildly successful Need for Speed Underground, EA has followed up with another groundbreaking racing title. Need for Speed Carbon will have you outrunning the
police and taking on rival gangs for control of several neighborhood zones. This time you’ll also get the chance to take your racing off the city streets and onto the winding canyon
roads that surround the city. There’s a great selection of real-world cars that you can purchase as you progress. You’ll find that the three different types of cars all have
unique handling styles, and it’s up to you to choose the right one for the job. If solid driving action is what you crave, Need for Speed Underground offers it in bucket loads.
Saving the best for last leaves us with Nintendo’s own title, WarioWare: Smooth Moves. Built specifically with the Wii Remote in mind, it makes the best use of the Wii’s
controller we’ve seen yet. The game is made up of over 200 minigames that will challenge your skills in the form of bizarre but surprisingly fun tasks. Picking a giant nostril,
sawing through a log and answering a telephone may not sound like thrilling premises for minigames, but indeed they are. WarioWare not only takes advantage of the Wii Remote’s
unique control features, but it looks amazing and is a blast to play with friends. In short, this title deserves a place in your library.
The Nintendo Wii may not the offer the bells and whistles of the higher priced consoles, but that was never Nintendo’s arena anyway. Instead Nintendo revisits
its roots and focuses on what made them the industry giant that they are now: injecting fun and innovative gameplay into a field that sorely needs it.
