BlogBits team decided to have a closer look at the second genration iPod Touch that was launched recently for today’s post. Though not radically different from its previous version, it is certainly better and improved with its added features and new design. The new model is more user friendly with its external volume control, internal speaker, long battery life and full Nike + integration.
Following are its few special features:
External volume control and loud speaker
The sleek volume switch on its left side makes it convenient for quick volume adjustments. Its internal speaker though can be a nuisance in travelling, is described by Steve Jobs as ‘perfect for casual listening’.
Nike + integration for iPod Touch
The new version includes complete built-in Nike + iPod support, which means the Nike + iPod Sensor (available separately) into your Nike+ shoe will track your time, distance, and calories burned and will communicate the same to your iPod touch, giving you voice feedback on your progress.
Genius playlist generator
The second generation also introduces the new Genius automatic playlist generator, which can create an instant 25-song playlists based on the musical characteristics of a single song. The feature is easy to use and will enable you to create and save the playlists directly on to your ipod touch.
Array of apps
Apple claims that the latest version offers everything you want – from games, movies, music, TV shows to web browsing, email reading, calendar, calculator, and world clock applications, all in one slim device.
Hardware accessories
With third-party “Made for iPod” hardware accessories such as Bluetooth transmitters, audio/video docks, external battery packs, and speaker systems, you can even expand the functions of your iPod device.
Attractive design
With its pretty interface, rounded edges, shiny chrome back and yellow tinted screen, the new Touch is definitely more chic. But barring these few cosmetic changes, the new Touch retains its precursor’s hardware. It has the same dimensions (4.3 inches by 2.4 inches by 0.31 inch), similar wide screen (3.5 inch) and its jack and dock are in the same place as in the first generation.
Priced at £189 (8GB), £215 (16GB), and £280 (32GB), the second-generation iPod Touch may seem expensive but if you measure it against the array of features it offers, the gadget becomes more than worth its cost. By spending a few quid you can even upgrade your first generation software to include all capabilities of second generation software including the Genius play lists on your model.
However, the three additional features, viz, external volume control, in built speaker and Nike + support are exclusive to the second generation model. These three features coupled with its shiny sleek design make this new model much closer to its kin iPhone.
In short, the new generation Touch is not just simply a media player and mdash. The addition of third-party apps makes it more of a pocket PC than an MP3 player. However, if you already own an iphone or first generation iPod, there is no reason to buy the new Touch. But if you are looking to upgrade from an old player or if you love innovation and experimenting with new capabilities, the second generation Touch is your answer.
