The breaking news in the portable computing market today was the announcement from Apple that it was dropping NVIDIA GeForce graphic cards from their manufacturing process citing many complaints about serious overheating. The NVIDIA overheating debacle has been in the market for quite some now and it is just helping competitor companies like ATI to roll out immensely popular graphic solutions like ATI Radeon HD 4000 series.
Many notebook products from Apple were reported to be overheating quite frequently over a period of 2-3 months with graphic card malfunctioning. Due to significant overheating of the graphic card, Apple thinks that it would be hazardous to keep using GeForce video cards in their products anymore. The company has declared that they will not be using NVIDIA solutions ‘for three to four years.’ Discussions between the two giants were getting really hot after NVIDIA’s top executives were reported to be arrogant in the negotiations conference for the supply of graphics solution for Apple products. The incident occurred while Apple was searching for graphic solutions for its upcoming Nehalem notebook series and iMac computers.
Technically speaking, only a few certain graphic cards from NVIDIA GeForce range showed overheating symptoms. The new and advanced GeForce 8500M GT was also reported to have overheating problems with Apple machines. Interestingly, other companies like Dell and HP have also reported about such incidents, only difference is that no other company has taken such a strong stand on the issue. Apple’s wrath on NVIDIA was considered a bit too harsh a reaction.
