Camera batteries provide the essential backup to the unit when electricity is not readily available. Batteries used in digital cameras are different from the usual standard camera batteries. Digital camera batteries come in varying sizes, capacity, and models.

Alkaline disposable battery: Alkaline disposable battery or popularly known as AA and AAA batteries come in varying sizes and brands. The batteries are made up of alkaline electrolyte of potassium hydroxide. It is disposable kind which need to thrown out after use.

Alkaline rechargeable battery: These alkaline batteries can be recharged as and when the power is depleted. They come in different sizes, such as AA, AAA, C, and D. These are ideal to be used as digital camera batteries.

Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) battery: This is a rechargeable battery which has the capacity to retain its charge when not in use. However, a major drawback with NiCd battery is that it has a shorter lifespan and requires recharging before use.

Nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery: NiMH is the cheapest rechargeable battery which has a longer life. However, the battery loses its charge when kept idle and needs to be recharged before using the next time.

Lithium battery: Lithium batteries are costlier than other digital camera batteries but have a longer life compared to that of alkaline AA batteries. These batteries perform well even in cold weather. Hence, lithium batteries are preferred as digital camera batteries.
