External hard drive has grown from what it was a few decades ago. Today, considering how sleek, trendy, compact and feature rich this device is, it has seen a lot of improvement and changes in the past few decades, much like the computer with which it was to be used. The initial ones of this kind were huge, bulky and consumed a lot of power. This made them more restricted in usage, being fit only for huge industrial and protected professional use. The delicateness of the part made it difficult to use them in harsh and rough environments. And the price, the bulk and the power consumption made it difficult for home and personal use. However, the initial hard disks, even the ones used as an integral part of the computer, could be called external hard drives since they were bulky enough to demand their own space outside the computer cabinet.
However, today, external hard drive has come to have a different definition and meaning of its own. It has got into a world of not only high capacity and performance, but also aesthetic looks, compact usage, and more. It has become one of the good companions of those on the move, or simple with huge amount of files to be stored and carried around. An external hard drive could be more or of equal capacity as the internal ones, making them quite a good option for those looking for extra space for storing information.
