HSPA+ (High Speed Packet Access Plus) is a high-speed wireless network technology that the T-Mobile has built out only in Philadelphia.

Nationwide operator in the U.S., T-Mobile claims, they are the only operator to provide HSPA+ (High Speed Packet Access Plus) as an interim technology before rolling out LTE (Long-Term Evolution), a technology that will deliver even faster connections. AT&T, their major competitor, would not be launching anything on the lines to compete.

So far, T-Mobile has launched the HSPA+ network in just Philadelphia market but hopes to roll out the service upgrade across its existing 3G footprint by mid-2010. Claims are made that the speed delivered by this technology could be 3 to 5 times faster than the existing 3G connection.
The USB flash drive is called the Rocket and is made by Huwei. It works on both PC and Mac. In addition to HSPA+, it will work on 3G, EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution) and Wi-Fi. Users can use upto 16 GB micro sd memory into the usb stick.
T-Mobile has not revealed the pricing for the product, which will be in the shops in March.

To be honest we find most of these USB flash drives to be at least slightly amusing; but as we all know, one of the beautiful things about human beings is our ability to disagree on matters such as humour, and as a result all of the following gadgets are likely to offend at least a couple of thousand people.

Should you be extremely sensitive, or even at work, we advise you not to scroll further than USB drive number three.

1.The USB Tampon Drive

According to this fantastic device’s creators over at Meninos, the tampon flash drive is ‘Coming Soon’ and as such is yet to have a price attached. The tampon will come in three sizes depending on the severity of your ‘data flow’ – 1, 8 and 16GB – and I would imagine it advisable to keep the device away from your regular tampons so as to reduce the risk of a mix-up.

2. The USB Fur Drive

Magnhild Disington is the brainchild behind the fur-bound USB drive seen above, created as part of a collection called The Modern Amulet. The Danish designer’s drives look fantastically decadent, and Disington says of the devices: ‘With The Modern Amulet I have tried to balance the emotional value between the information we carry and the objects we use to carry them’. Interesting, but not likely to stop the cries of animal rights protestors when they realise the sticks are covered in real fur. It can’t be long ’til Peta-bytes. Ahem.

3. The USB Fetus Drive

According to the Fetus Drive’s father – Doctor What – this peculiar and undoubtedly controversial design came about, in part, due to his being ‘enthralled with the fetus shape and pattern’ for some time. Fair enough. Dr. What subsequently decided to share the creative process behind the birth of the drive and as a result you can now make one of your own by reading the guide here.

4. The USB Penis Drive

There isn’t much to say about this apart from the blatantly obvious: it’s a USB drive encased in a fake rubber penis. Reading the gadget’s homepage is a pun-filled experience (e.g. ‘never pull out too soon or you could lose your data!’), and also quite surprising when you realise its frankly high discounted price of $20. Just don’t buy one for any prudish friends or this particular USB drive could cost you a little extra.

5. The USB Finger Drive

Finnish computer programmer Jerry Jalava was involved in a motorcycle accident back in 2008 which resulted in one of his fingertips being amputated and, as most people would in the same situation, quickly decided to adapt his prosthetic digit to suit his lifestyle. The result is a USB fingertip that can store up to 2GB of data and the potential, should he decide to mass-produce his design, to tap into an incredibly niche market.

One of the handiest gadgets on the market must be the battery free flashlight. These great devices merely need a good shake to provide more than adequate lighting. Called the Nightstar, this device weighs just 11 ounces and is great for those emergency situations where batteries are not an option.

The flashlight enables the energy created by a magnet passing through a coil of wire, when it is shaken, to be stored in a capacitor. This then is used to light the torch when it is needed. Some people claim that they have had their torch for over twelve years and it is still going strong. At around $25 this must be one of the bargains of the century!

Now for something really cool! The Magicjack is a little device that fits onto the computer through the USB port. It then allows the user to make phone calls to landlines for free in the US. It costs just $40 for the first year, and $20 per year thereafter. What a great way to stay in touch, and virtually for free.

Is anyone bored with those square black boxes that house speakers these days? Look no further, because the Harman Kardon GLA-55 Speakers are housed in miniature icebergs! Yes, speaker casings that mimic icebergs. Although some would doubt that these work properly. Users have said that they give great bass response along with high frequency sound. They look good on the shelf too instead of the boring outfits that we are used to!

Has anyone ever heard the expression ‘I was so tired I could have slept standing up’? Well, we can do just that now that the Vertical Bed has been invented. It comes with black sunglasses, noise cutting earphones and a stand alone umbrella so that the person can snooze away while waiting for an appointment. The question is though, who would want to sleep upright? Doesn’t this put the person in a very vulnerable position? Strange but true indeed.

For those who love to know about conceptual gadgets, here comes the Asus Stealth laptop that thinks it is a desktop. With a few alterations it changes from a laptop into a fully fledged destop and has a rimless keyboard, 17 inch screen and all the other bits and pieces that go with today’s forward thinking computers. Because it is ultra thin it looks good in tablet mode but still has things like a DVD burner etc on board. It is doubtful whether this design will ever see the light of day, but stranger things have happened.

And for something that sounds strange but actually could have a use, try the Help Lock Door Knob. This gadget, also still in the design stage, actually calls for help if a person is in a room for too long. This could be useful on bathroom doors, or for where elderly people or the disabled are known to be living. It contacts a programmed number should the first warning alarm not be turned off.

Everyone knows how difficult it is if our precious belongings are stolen. Laptops in particular hold everything to do with out work and home life. When these get stolen, it is like the world caves in. So to keep prying fingers from taking the opportunity to steal, designers have come up with the Laptop Sleeve that looks like a battered envelope. With this tucked safely under the arm, no one would suspect that it held a laptop.

Now, when coming in from a very rainy day, what do we do with a very wet umbrella? It drips everywhere and even paperwork can get wet. No more! Fold up umbrellas now come in their own rigid container with a snap top so that they stay contained even in the car. The container can be emptied out and dried when a safe distance from anything that will be spoiled by water. A neat idea indeed!

Staying with safety, now there is a good gadget that helps to keep people safe. The Highgear SmartLatch Panic Alarm is made to be carried in the hand. If anyone comes to attack, this gadget has a 95 decibel alarm inside which will shock the attacker and attract attention from anyone else in the area. Of course, some people would prefer to carry a Taser, but these are still not legal in many states. It would be better to carry this attack alarm so at least the perpetrator could not use it on the person being attacked!

Anyone who has ever been stuck in a traffic jam for hours will appreciate that there are vehicles that can beat all of that boring waiting. The Orbis is a single wheeled vehicle that has an internal motor inside the wheel. The great thing is that this little beauty can go at up to 22 kph and only ways 25 pounds so once it is folded it is easy to pack it away and carry it to the office. A clever idea that was once used with the Segway machine but this one can run on roads too. It is so well stabilized that it can actually stand upright on its own on just the one wheel so there will be no unicycle lessons for this one!

For something completely odd how about using batteries that recharge using your urine. Yes, that is not a printing error. Magnesium and carbon inside the battery reacts to the urine and pumps out power. The only trouble that anyone could think of is just how does the unmentionable get into the battery? Well, they do supply a pipette of tiny proportions with the batteries, but methinks that many would not like the thought of fussing around with the liquid matter to get the batteries charged!

For anyone who just loves cooking, and gadgets too, take a look at these little numbers that were dreamed up for a competition which asked for kitchen gadget designs for the future.

The ’scratch my back’ is a very interesting grater but made in the shape of a cute looking hedgehog. The clever design means that the arched back will allow food to drop through without having to hold the grater away from the dish. ‘Grate’ stuff!

Another gadget in the same competition was the salt and pepper orbs that seemingly float above the table. Using magnetism to make the orbs hover above the plate makes these excellent conversation pieces as well as being innovative and just plain handy to have around. Called the Plus Minus F, this set up will certainly hit the spot for forward thinking lovers of food.

Now for something a little bit useless in many people’s eyes, the square egg maker. Simply boil the egg in the usual way, peel it, cool it down and then put it in the egg press. The odd thing is the even the yoke comes out square. At just $5 this may be one of those silly gadgets that sit at the back of the drawer for years, but one plus point is that it makes eggs easier to store, and it looks good when cutting up for party food.
