Here are a few highlight updates from the first day at GSMA World Mobile Congress 2009.
LG commits to Windows Mobile OS
LG made announcements to increase the number of Windows Mobile enabled smartphones by upto tenfold in time to come. At present the only LG mobile phone to support the OS is LG Incite released late last year in the US. They have entered an agreement with Microsoft to have develop the software and hardware in tighter coordination to have around 26 state-of-the-art devices ready for release by 2012. The already announced LG GM730 is said to be a Windows Mobile 6.1 smartphone.
Microsoft releases Windows Mobile 6.5
Microsoft announces the new version of Windows Mobile OS. Following is a list of feature updates for the new version:
- My Phone service: This is a web based backup service for mobile phones. My Phone is available as an invitation-only beta version at the moment.
- Windows Marketplace for Mobile: This is search based application to browse through applications for your smartphone. Using this application, you can download and purchase any application which is compatible with your smartphone once you login using your WIndows Live ID.
- Internet Explorer Mobile: Built on IE6, this browser allows both Javascript as well as Flash based content and let you do more using your mobile like checking flights, buying movie tickets as compared to any other browser.
Samsung launches new multimedia based phones:
Samsung launched four new models, Omnia HD, Ultra Touch, Beat DJ and Beat Disc. All these models have touch displays and are focussed around multimedia features.
Nokia announces Ovi store:
Following the success of Apple App Store, Nokia replies back with much expected announcement of their own brand of application store, Ovi. Developers can upload new applications on the storefront and users can download them easily. The store launches in May for downloads, however, developers who get a 70% share in revenue generated from the store can upload new applications from March 09. The new release N97, to be out in May will come preintegrated with the store software.
HTC releases Touch Diamond2 and Touch Pro2:
While having unimaginative names, the two phones have a few people centric design optimised for mobile communication. Both smartphones have bigger screen sizes as compared to their predecessors. While it was said that both smartphones would be shipped for worldwide distribution in May, the price for both phones was not revealed.
