GSMA World Mobile Congress 2009 Updates-2

After a brief snooze on the blog activity, we are back again with full force and will be bringing you a technology update every day. We bring you the second day update from GSMA World Mobile Congress 2009 today.

Nokia’s Ovi store to have a distinctive edge

Unlike its other competitors, Nokia plans to enable users to personalise their shopping in their new Ovi store. Nokia says the applications and the content sold in its store will vary according to user preferences, their geographic location and recommendations from friends.

“Ovi store is not just about applications. It also knows you and adds a social location aspect to the shop. It’s a smart shop.” said Niklas Savander, Nokia’s Executive Vice President.

Vodafone enters a new deal with Opera

With an intent to provide its users with Internet operability on low cost handsets, Vodafone decided to enter a new deal with browser company Opera Software. One of the factors for this move could possibly be a trial of the Opera Mini browser that was conducted by Vodafone Egypt that saw more than 400,000 customers downloading the product in a month.

In order to mitigate the data costs associated with mobile Internet browsing, Opera plans to compress web pages up to more than 90 percent before sending them to customers’ handsets, which would also mean that browsing would be fast even in areas of relatively low network speeds.

“We are confident that the agreement with Opera Software will help to ensure that customers will be able to enjoy an even more fulfilling experience on their handsets,” said Peter Knook, Vodafone’s Internet services director.
