GYY – World’s first solar powered Notebooks from iUnika

iUnika, a Spanish tech company, have come out with a very unique concept of solar-powered notebooks. This is a great breakthrough in the field of notebooks and this is the first notebook that can truly be classified as an Eco-friendly notebook. This notebook is meant only for the average user who will use it for primitive tasks, like making documents, e-mails, browsing the internet and so on. You can’t expect to play games on it. But, this concept can be worked upon to create better and more powerful Eco-friendly notebooks in the future.

You can expect the GYY to be out in the European market by June, 2009.

Specifications:

  • CPU- 400 MHz MIPS processor
  • Operating System- Linux
  • RAM- 128 MB of RAM, this in a normal notebook would be very less, but as the OS is Linux-based, it won’t require a lot of RAM
  • Display- GYY comes with an 8-inch screen, which can have a maximum resolution of 800 X 400 (WVGA-Wide VGA)
  • Space- 64GB SSD
  • USB 2.0 ports
  • Connectivity- Supports Ethernet and Wi-Fi connectivity; user also has an option of adding GPRS connectivity

The solar panel is placed on the lid of the notebook, so all you need to do is to make sure that the lid is facing a window, so that there is an easy access of solar power.

Final word:

Using Linux as the OS is masterstroke, as it makes the notebook that much more economical, as with Linux you will have access to 5000-odd free applications. Priced at a humble €160, this should be a must-buy for the users who are always on the go, as with the solar power comes the freedom from carrying bulky power adapters!
