January 09 Update: Mobile Phones

BlogBits team brings you a monthly update from the mobile phone world. Through the following sections we will have a look at the major news update from all the leading mobile phone brands and latest news.

Palm

Currently released only for the US Print Network, Palm Pre, is a ‘smart’ phone that’s predicted to outclass all the competition in Smartphone market. It’s said that the innovative user interface and information management approach along with it’s appealing hardware is what caused such a stir. It’s predicted that the worldwide version will be announced next month.

Nokia

Nokia announced four new handsets for their “Classic” range. The Nokia 6208 Classic was the first major product release of the year: a touch screen Series 40 device aimed at the Chinese market demonstrates the use of touch screen for non-Smartphone devices. The other three phones being inspired by one of the Nokia bestsellers, 6300: the Nokia 6700 Classic adds 3.5G support, a 5 megapixel camera and GPS; the Nokia 6303 Classic is a medium cost adaptation with significantly better battery life, and the Nokia 2700 Classic takes all the essential features of 6300 to bring out a true low cost phone which scores well on quality. Another release was Nokia N79 Active, variation of the existing N79 with a sporty look.

Motorola

Motorola featured three handsets during the CES show in January. The Motorola MOTOSURF A3100 is an iPhone-class Smartphone with a touchscreen, GPS and WiFi. The Motorola VA76r Tundra has a rugged design releases for AT&T in the US. While the Motorola W233 Renew is an attractive low-cost phone that uses recycled plastic bottles for its casing.

Sony Ericsson

Sony Ericsson added to the Walkman range with Sony Ericsson W715 and W508 handsets. New release, Sony Ericsson C510 is a lower priced Cybershots phone. Though all these are good handsets they are similar in many ways to the existing Sony Ericsson models.

Upcoming Events

The most awaited event in the mobile world, Mobile World Congress which runs from the 16th to the 19th of February, is expected to be the busiest period for new releases as always. Among expected releases are some new phones with QWERTY keyboards from Nokia, number of Android handsets from various players plus major announcements from all the prominent manufacturers in mobile technology.
