Nintendo 3DS — the Game-Changer Indeed

The Game Changer, that’s what Nintendo calls the newest and upcoming entrant to its family of hand held consoles. And if a preview of its features and capabilities are any indication, Nintendo may be spot on about their claim.

For the first time in the history of hand held gaming consoles, we’ll be seeing a real 3D screen implemented that provides a 3D view without glasses. The size of the main screen has also been increased by 10% giving the console the biggest display for devices in its category on the market.

There are a number of other notable features in the Nintendo 3DS such as:

  • The console supports both 3D as well as 2D games and has a gamecard slot that is backward compatible to DS as well as DSi download games
  • It also contains an SD memory card slot and comes with a 2 GB card by default
  • The console contains the same old controls, which means that old Nintendo fans can pick up the console and start playing right away
  • New controls include an analog circle pad for precise movement of characters, camera, etc.
  • The console comes with an accelerometer and a gyroscope, so that you can play games that respond to your movements rather than keypad controls
  • The device comes with its own charging cradle, which allows it to remain in sleep mode indefinitely
  • They have added a “Home” button on the console, which when pressed suspends all activity and takes you back to the home screen. Once you’re done with your work, you can return back to the paused game and continue from where you left it
  • The console also comes with a 3D depth slider so that you can adjust the 3D output as per your preferences
  • The console has 3 cameras: one inward facing for your own photographs, and two outward facing to allow you to take 3D photographs of your surroundings

Lastly, not only is the 3DS packed with great new features, but also a target for many new games that publishers are eager to introduce to the market. In fact, a number of old games have already been upgraded to 3D. What now remains to be seen is how well the audience will like it; we definitely remain positive. Stay tuned!

You said it in the first line! 3DS is a milestone product not just in the world of handheld gaming, but also on the audio visual horizon. 3D vision without glasses, looks like this technology will (or hopefully should) percolate down to 3D TVs, mobile phones, tablets; in short anything that has an audio visual interface.
This just might be our window to future. Well done Ninty!
