Nokia N97-A preview

When we first saw Nokia N96 with its 2.8 inch TFT display, 5.0 megapixel camera, 16 GB of internal memory, and a slick dual slide design, it was hard to imagine how anyone could improve on that. Therefore, this definitely comes as a big surprise — although a very pleasant one.

N97 promises to be all that a phone would have to be to enter the race with the existing array of successful smartphones like the Apple iPhone and the Blackberry Storm. To begin with, it has a massive 3.5 inch touchscreen slider and a 16:9 widescreen display. The screen is also enabled with haptic feedback. With N97, you would be spared the boredom of using one key to toggle with three, and sometimes four characters; the phone comes with a full QWERTY slideout keyboard. It has also a greatly increased storage capacity of 32 GB that could give the best on the market a run for their money. Furthermore, the storage capacity can be extended by an additional 16 GB though a microSD card.

For those fixated on surfing the Internet no matter where they are, life is bound to get a lot more interesting. Along with its massive display, the N97 comes with built-in web browsing technologies like WAP, XHTML, and HTML to provide a great mobile Internet experience.

The next feature of the N97 will have all the music lovers lose their mind — the phone can play up to 37 hours of music and 4.5 hours of video. Yes, that’s absolutely right; the audio and video playback times have been increased massively.

You would be able to listen to songs in a wide range of formats like WMA, MP3, AAC, eAAC, and eAAC+. It includes FM Radio with RDS technology, and a Music Display with a playlist feature.

HD quality video recording has been made possible, and as mentioned before, the playback time has increased greatly. According to Nokia, you can keep playing those videos continuously for 1.5 days. Those of you looking forward to having video calls on the run, there is good news for you too. N97 has a second camera with a resolution of 640 x 480 specifically designed for video calling.

For pictures, the maximum possible resolution is 2595 x 1944 pixels. The camera features an autofocus and a flash that becomes functional in poorly lit places. N97 supports Pictbridge™, which allows you to print images directly to a compatible printer and lets you completely bypass the PC.

With N97, Nokia plans to introduce a new concept named “Social Location”. It will be able to understand your real time location and update the social networking websites with this data. You are allowed to restrict the information via the social networking website to ensure that only your friends can see it. This has been enabled with the help of A-GPS  and an integrated compass.

The phone supports GPS, and ships with the usual HSDPA, Wi-Fi, USB 2.0, stereo Bluetooth connectivity, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The operating system is Symbian S60 5th edition; the N96 had S60 3rd edition as the development platform.

While on one hand the N97 promises to be a great piece of gadgetry to posses, its estimated cost might a little daunting. It may cost up to £500.

Either way, the N97 promises to be the flagship of Nokia’s smartphones.
