Pioneer’s new offering, 400 GB Blu-ray like HD Disks

Pioneer has announced the development of a Blu-ray like super-disc that can store up to 400GB of data on 16 layers. That’s more than what most PC/laptop hard-drives can store, and all that much space on 1 single disc, is quiet an astonishing development indeed.

The disc, is basically developed using the Blu-ray technology, and it has 16 separate layers each with a 25GB capacity.  Pioneer is persistently emphasizing that these new super-discs will be compatible with the existing Blu-ray players as the lens specs for reading these discs will be more or less the same as in the Blu-ray discs. However, reports have it that they will still need a modified pick-up mechanism to actually view the data as the track pitch of the 2 discs are not the same.

These discs will be of great use in the field of gaming, especially in PS3 discs, where the game developers will have a lot more space to work with in terms of the size of their games.

Initially, Pioneer will be launching only read-only type discs and will later go on to developing writable discs too. These discs are slotted to be launched sometime later this year.

So, let us wait and watch how successful these discs actually turn out to be. As of now, these discs seem like a pretty good proposition. Imagine you can have the whole season of HIMYM, Prison Break, and any other of your favorite shows, or the complete Lord of the rings film series on 1 single disc, that too in High-Definition picture quality.

This is only the beginning as Pioneer is planning to launch a 1Tera-Byte (yes, that’s right!) super-disc in 2013, in the pipe-line.
