RAM an Important Component

RAM, is an acronym for random access memory, it is a computer memory which allows computer data storage and allows the data to be accessed randomly irrespective of its continuation, link to last data accessed or location.

As early as 1949 different forms of random access memory were used, for example, delay line memory and magnetic core memory that is thousands of bits were used for storage some of which may be random and some may not be random. The modern RAMS that are used today were invented by early 1970’s and since then many modifications and updating have taken place. The widely used model of RAM today is the DRAM and the SRAM that is dynamic or static RAM. The static Ram is faster than the DRAM but is very expensive and hence DRAM is more widely used.

The only drawback of the DRAM and SDRAM is that they lose data once the power is switched off.  Hence are very volatile. There are new types of RAM being invented like the NVRAM (Non-volatile RAM) that has the capacity to store data even once the power is switched off. Other types of memory storage devices used are the ROM, Flash Drive etc.

ROM compared to RAM cannot be rewritten or its data cannot be modified. It is a read only memory drive where main software’s are stored. The RAM data can be erased and rewritten number of times. Flash drive is more like a RAM than a ROM and has the capacity to store up to 64 GB memory.
