AVCHD (AVC-HD, AVC HD) is a combination of AVC video with PCM 7.1 or AC-3 5.1 audio, encapsulated into MPEG-2 Transport stream. Compared to HDV camcorders based on MPEG-2 codec, AVC camcorders achieve better compression and lower data rates with comparable image quality. AVCHD supports a variety of resolutions and aspect ratios, all the way from 480/60i to 1080/60i “Full HD” with 1920×1080 pixels in 16:9 aspect ratio. The typical maximum bit rate for HD recordings is ~24 Mbit/s when recording to hard disk or flash memory and ~18 Mbit/s for when recording to DVD. This results in 3 MB or 2.25 MB used per second respectively. This is about 6 minutes of recording for every GB of storage.

To designate AVCHD recording support, the Memory Stick PRO format has added the Mark2 certification. Memory Stick media products with the Mark2 logo meet the higher writing speed requirements and are certified to operate with AVCHD recording products.
