The Heir Apparent SD Memory Card – The SDXC

The newest addition to the SD memory card line-up is the SDXC (extended capacity) memory card which according to Scan Disk can hold up to two TB of data. They have announced the SDXC as the heir apparent to the SDHC format because of its faster read and write speed, and even larger memory capacity. In February 2010, Scan Disk released the 64 GB SDXC memory card. Although the capacity is amazing, it is the speed of this SD memory card that makes it stand out. The 64GB SDXC memory card is a Class 4 memory device with read speeds up to 15mb per second.

The SDXC memory card is compatible with a limited number of devices right now. Cannon announced their new VIXIA camcorder models and PowerShot cameras would be SDXC compliant. This SD memory card will hold about 8 hours and finally the video camera buff can shoot more than just a few minutes of action. Scan Disk is making the most of this capability in their advertising. The Scan Disk Image Mate memory card readers are compatible with the new SDXC memory cards if the operating system of the machine they are connected to supports exFat. Windows Vista and Windows 7 currently have drivers available to support the SDXC memory card.

This is not going to be an inexpensive keychain SD memory card you can toss in the washer and not mind, because the price tag on the 64 GB SDXC memory card is around 350.00 from the manufacturer.
