With the gameplay of PlayStation 3 games being so exciting, the gamers would certainly want the facility of voice chat or similar form of direct interaction. The multiplayer gaming is increasingly becoming popular over last few years. The liberty that PC users enjoy is voice chat with active internet connection during playing online multiplayer game. Some games also support live video chat during gameplay for better interaction.
PlayStation 3 users would love to have a voice chat and XMB party system for the console. The missing cross-game chat technology is one of the biggest drawbacks of the PlayStation 3 gaming console. One of the practical problems is that their competitors own the XGC patent which makes it difficult for Sony to implement a similar service.
But, there is a new hope with Skype emerging as the clear global winner in the field of audio/video chat worldwide. Skype service running in background and with minimum bandwidth utilization could act as an in-game chat system. A background application based on Skype could provide private voice chat, voice mail and other premium features to PlayStation 3 users.
Skype already has a platform of over 20 million active users. Recently, Skype was incorporated with the PSP platform as a standalone application. A similar architecture wouldn’t be too hard to develop for Sony PlayStation 3 platform. Games all over the world welcomed the Skype application with open arms with almost 60% of North American PSP users subscribing for the Skype application.
